Daniel Mercer
Daniel Mercer had a rule about rabbit holes. Never enter one after midnight. It was a rule he had developed over twenty years as a journalist, sometime between discovering that every political scandal eventually led to a message board and realizing that three hours on the internet could make almost anything seem plausible.
At 1:47 in the morning, he broke his rule. The house was quiet. His laptop was open on the kitchen table, beside a half-finished glass of Scotch and a yellow legal pad covered in handwriting that had become progressively less legible as the night went on.
